5 Signs Your Sauna Routine Needs an Upgrade

You've got the towel, the water bottle, and the post-sauna cold plunge dialed in. But are you missing the most important piece of your sauna kit?

You take your sauna sessions seriously. You've read the Huberman podcast transcripts, you've optimized your heat-to-cold ratio, and you know exactly how many minutes to spend at each temperature. But there's one area most men completely overlook.

1. You sit directly on the bench

This one seems obvious once you hear it, but most men don't think twice about it. The sauna bench surface can reach 60–70°C. Sitting directly on it sends that heat straight to the areas most sensitive to temperature damage. At minimum, sit on a thick towel. Better yet, use targeted cooling to actively counteract the heat.

2. You've never thought about scrotal temperature

Here's the uncomfortable truth: your testes are outside your body for a reason. They need to be 2–4°C cooler than your core to function properly. In a sauna, that temperature differential collapses. If you've never considered what this means for your testosterone and fertility, it's time to start.

3. You feel unusually tired after sessions

Post-sauna fatigue is normal to a degree — heat exposure is a form of stress, and your body needs to recover. But if you're consistently dragging for hours after a session, it could be a sign that the heat is suppressing your testosterone more than it should. T-levels affect energy, mood, and motivation. Protecting them during the sauna means you leave feeling restored, not depleted.

4. You've optimized everything else

Cold plunge protocol? Dialed. Hydration? On point. Breathing technique? Practiced. If you've optimized every other aspect of your sauna routine but haven't addressed testicular cooling, you're leaving the most important piece on the table. It's like training five days a week but never sleeping — the missing piece undermines everything else.

5. You're planning to start a family

This is the most urgent sign. If kids are in your future — even years from now — your sauna routine today affects your fertility down the line. Repeated heat exposure without protection leads to measurable declines in sperm count and quality. And because the sperm production cycle takes 74 days, you need to start protecting yourself well before you start trying.
